Things to Do in Sayulita

At Casa Fénix Sayulita, we want your stay to be filled with unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re seeking adventure on the water or a peaceful encounter with nature, Sayulita offers something for everyone. Here are some of our favorite activities.

Surfing

Sayulita is a true surf-lover’s paradise, offering ideal waves for all experience levels—from first-timers to seasoned surfers. Our bay features both right and left breaks, and conditions are reliable year-round, with the best swells arriving from December through early April.

Local surf schools make it easy to dive into the action, offering daily trips to nearby breaks, complete with transportation and expert instruction. If waves in town are a little busy or not quite right, instructors can take you to quieter, pristine spots just a short drive away.

Beyond Sayulita, you’ll find fantastic waves in nearby Lo de Marcos, San Pancho, and Punta Mita—each offering something unique for surfers of all kinds.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has also become a local favorite. Whether you want to ride gentle waves or explore the coastline at your own pace, SUP is a fun, family-friendly way to get out on the water. Sayulita even hosted the 2015 ISA World Stand Up Paddle & Paddleboard Championship, proof of its world-class water sports culture.

Sport Fishing

No visit to Sayulita is complete without experiencing the incredible fishing along our coastline. From the shore, it’s easy to cast a line from the main beach, rocky coves, or the estuary—especially during summer months after the rains, when the fishing really comes alive. Early mornings and late afternoons are perfect for catching snook, jacks, and skipjacks, and no license is required if you’re fishing from land. If you book a tour, your license is already included.

For a more immersive adventure, consider heading out on a traditional Mexican panga. These small fishing boats fit up to four guests and are captained by experienced locals who know the waters well. Along with the thrill of catching dorado, marlin, sailfish, or tuna, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the coastline—and you may even spot whales, dolphins, or seabirds during your journey.

If you prefer a larger, more comfortable vessel, charter boats are available from Punta Mita, Puerto Vallarta, and Nuevo Vallarta, offering access to deep-sea fishing and world-class game fish. Whether you’re a casual fisherman or a dedicated angler, Sayulita’s fishing opportunities are unforgettable.

Whales & Dolphins in Sayulita

Sayulita sits where the North Pacific Ocean meets the entrance to the Sea of Cortez—one of the most biologically rich regions in the world. This unique position creates a vibrant marine transition zone that attracts a remarkable variety of whales and dolphins throughout the year.

Located just north of the Bay of Banderas and east of the Marías Islands, Sayulita benefits from warm currents, calm bays, and nutrient-rich waters that support thriving wildlife populations.

Year-Round Dolphin Sightings

Visitors can often spot dolphins directly from Sayulita’s main beach. Bottlenose dolphins are frequently seen riding the waves or socializing near the shore.

For those venturing farther out by boat—such as on fishing trips or tours to the Marieta Islands—there’s an opportunity to encounter additional species, including:

  • Pantropical Spotted Dolphins – known for their distinctive white-speckled markings

  • Rough-Toothed Dolphins – sleek, coordinated swimmers with a smooth profile

  • Spinner Dolphins – playful and energetic, often leaping and spinning in large pods

These marine encounters make Sayulita an unforgettable destination for nature lovers and ocean explorers.
